Can You Make Chocolate Ice Cream?
Our STEM Challenge is a great way to invite kids to practice researching and using their imagination, in a way that will get them excited to want to COOK!
For this challenge, kids will make chocolate ice cream!
Are you up for the challenge? Compare the thickness of ice cream with different ingredients, which one do you prefer?
What you need:
- Half and Half
- Whole Milk
- Salt
- Ice
- Cocoa Powder
- Sugar
- Vanilla Extract
- Ziplock Baggies (Sandwich & Gallon Size)
- Compare & Contrast Diagram Of Your Choice
What you need to do…
- Kids will need to decide which type of milk or mixture of milks they plan on using.
- Students will predict if the type of milk they use will make the ice cream creamier or runnier.
- Gather ingredients needed.
- Begin mixing items, and observe the changes as the ice cream begins to turn creamier.
- Students will then compare their creamy creations with others.
- Fill in the compare and contrast diagram and make adjustments for another batch.
How To Make Ice Cream In A Bag
- Pour 1 cup of half and half (or ½ cup half and half, ½ cup whole milk) into a small ziploc bag.
- Add 1/4 teaspoons of vanilla extract ½ teaspoon of sugar, 2 teaspoons of cocoa powder
- Seal the bag firmly
- In the larger ziploc bag, fill it about ½ way with ice and then add ¼ cup of salt
- Then add your small bag and fill with extra ice on top. Seal the large bag.
- Get gloves for shaking and shake for about 6 minutes *gloves are needed since the salt makes the ice extra cold*
- Take the small bag out of the large bad and rinse the outside of the small bag with cold water
- Once done rinsing, carefully open the small bag, so you do not get any salt inside the bag
- Use a spoon to mix the icy part of inside of the bag, and watch it soften up
