Can You Lift A Cup Using Only A String?

Let’s work together to lift a cup! This week you will be able to work together to lift a cup, using only string!

Are you and your team up for the challenge?

What you need per group:

Preparing for this activity:

  • Cut the strings roughly 10 inches long
  • You will need 15-25 pieces of string
  • Take the string and one end will be tied to the binder ring

Starting the Activity:

  • Put the tennis ball on the middle of the binder ring
  • Have 5 students grab a piece of  the string and have them slowly lift up the tennis ball
  • If the 5 students struggle, let's add another 5 to the circle and try to lift the tennis ball again.
  • Continue to add students until the lifting is easier.
  • Talk about the importance of lifting together and the bigger the team the easier it is to be successful.
  • Show students that at 5 it is a struggle, but as you add to the team, it becomes so much easier.

Make the Activity More Challenging:

  • Instead of placing a tennis ball on the middle of the binder ring, put the plastic cup
  • Start with 5 students trying to lift the plastic cup up
  • Continue to add 5 students at a time until it becomes easier for them to lift the plastic cup
  • Talk about the importance of lifting together and the bigger the team the easier it is to be successful.
  • Show students that at 5 it is a struggle, but as you add to the team, it becomes so much easier.
