Are You Up For Spreading Kindness?

Be Kind! Our STEM Challenge is a great way to invite students to practice researching and using their imagination, in a way that will get them excited to SPREAD KINDNESS.

For this challenge, students will be able to use household items (big and small) to see how big of a ripple the smallest act of kindness can make.

Are you up for spreading kindness?

What you need per group...

  • Bowl or Cup of Water (filled about ¾ of the way)

  • Marshmallows

  • Rice (uncooked)

  • Buttons

  • Penny

  • Small Cup of Water

What you need per student…

What you need to do...

  • Start by breaking students up into groups of two to three

  • Have students create a Team Name

  • Tell students that the objective of this challenge is to measure the difference in the ring (ripple) from when the object drops

  • Give each group of students the materials needed

  • Students will then write down their Team Name on their Creator Sheets

  • Students will then start predicting which item they think will make the biggest ripple when dropped into the water

  • Students will then take turns dropping each item in, and record on the Creator Sheet how many ripples the item makes

  • Students will then talk about the findings and discuss if their predictions were correct, and try to figure out why that item made a bigger ripple

  • On the Creator Sheet, students will write down any final thoughts on bigger items versus smaller items that make a bigger impact and how that relates to acts of kindness. Does it really matter how big of an act of kindness you do? Be kind, no matter how small the act.

  • As a class come up with a few small acts of kindness they could do today

We would love to see you try this STEM Challenge. Share your results with us through social media!

Happy Making,
